Welcome Students and Parents

The purpose of this blog is to keep my students and DECA members informed on what's going on in and out of the classroom. The frequency of my blogs will depend on both events that will take place and the amount of free time that I will have. I'm also intending on posting details on job opportunities that prospective employers are seeking to fill. Given the sluggish economy this type of entry made be short and infrequent.

Good luck to all of my students (and parents) that may find this blog useful in staying more informed both at home and when out of town.

DEW TOUR
I've decided not to partner up with the Summer Dew Tour but am planning on partnering up with them for the Winter Tour. As the winter event approaches I will get you more information on what kind of promotional items we will have and how everyone can help out.

FACEBOOK
This year I've got a facebook account for my classes. My hope is that you use this to communicate with me as well as with your fellow students. My pledge to you is that if you have any questions or concerns I will address them online that evening or the next.

My long term vision for the account is to establish a marketing network that everyone can use for years to come to stay in touch and share ideas or information.

INTERNSHIPS
I was able to work with the Utah Jazz and the Maverik Center this summer and both have told me that if I have some successful DECA students that would be interested in doing an internship with them to give them a call. Based on your DECA involvement and success as well as your interest in event marketing I may choose a couple to work them next summer.

I look forward to a great school year and my door is always open if you need anything.

Mr. Brooks

After finishing up the Dew Tour marketing campaign we're now off to a bigger and better project. In partnership with Mr. Adams and Mrs. Jensen (who put on the Darfur concerts each of the last two years) we are tackling a new service project and this time it's to give back to our own community here in Magna.

In conjunction with the partnership within the school we're also teaming up with Granger, Hunter and Kearns high schools. We will be putting on two benefit concerts to raise money for families that are in desperate need of financial assistance. Each school will choose one family that they want to help out and the money earned from the benefit concert and other donations will be split equally among the 4 schools and donated to the selected families.

After reading through many tragic stories of various families in the Magna area we finally chose one family that we deemed as the most in need of our help. Their story is the following:

Less than a decade ago, Joe and Lynn Laberge decided to adopt little Robbie, who is deaf. A couple of years later, they adopted Robbie's biological sister, Jackie. Shortly after that, Lynn was diagnosed with progressed colon cancer and required surgery. For years, Lynn has struggled with her failing health, chemotherapy treatments, and raising two young children, one of which has a disability. Regardless of her trials, Lynn has maintained an awesome and positive attitude. She has tried to make life for her family as "normal" as possible.

A couple of months ago Lynn's doctors found a tumor growing on her spine that needed to be removed. She was flown to another state for the operation, but the result of the procedure was paralysis of her lower body. Meanwhile, Joe was laid off from his job and has been unable to pay the bills. Lynn was unable to return home after her surgery because she wasn't able to sit long enough for the plane ride home, so Robbie and Jackie were without their mother for several weeks.

Lynn has been back in Utah now for nearly a month, but cannot go home to her family because she is wheel-chair bound and her home cannot accommodate her. They need an automatic lift machine to help her get past the front door of their split-entry home. They will also need to remodel their bathroom to allow room for a wheel-chair.

It is not known how much longer Lynn will be with her family, but they just hope that they can get her home so she can spend her final days with her husband and children.

This post is to encourage people to help out in any way possible. If you're interested in helping out with the marketing and sales aspect then email me or stop by my room (217)for more details. If you're interested in buying tickets or donating money then you can stop by the Cyprus bookstore or we'll have a link on the Cyprus website within the next couple days so you can make an online contribution. Make sure if you make an online contribution that you specify it is for the How the West was "ONE" event.

I want to thank everyone that is currently involved and that may soon be involved with this wonderful cause.

The Dew Tour, which features X-game athletes that participate in activities such as motocross, skating and BMX racing and free style, have partnered up with Utah DECA in attempt to increase brand awareness to teenagers. This is the first time that the Tour has formed a relationship with schools in the U.S. and have chosen Utah as their state of choice to work with.

The Tour chose 5 schools in Utah to work with based on applications that were filled out. Cyprus High School was one of the 5 schools that the Tour deemed as their “Pro Schools” to work with. These schools received tons of promotional items to give away to students as part of their grass roots marketing campaign.

Cyprus DECA decided to give out these promotional items at home football, soccer, volleyball and tennis matches. Students that show up to these events are rewarded with items such as Dew Tour stickers, dog tags, bandanas, shirts and tickets to the Dew Tour’s Toyota Challenge. Items are also given out by DECA students during lunch and after school for students that can answer Dew Tour trivia correctly. In addition to receiving free items from the Dew Tour students also can get tickets to the Toyota Challenge by typing in the promotional code UTAHDECA at the ticketmaster.com website.

This opportunity has greatly benefited many people, including:
1. Cyprus students – free promotional gear, discounted event tickets
2. DECA students – getting practical marketing experience working with a well known business
3. Cyprus sports – Increased fan support by a wider demographic of students that are interested in the Dew Tour items
4. Dew Tour – receiving marketing and brand exposure to a demographic (teenagers) that is one of their largest supporters

The Dew Tour will take place September 17-20. If you would like to help out and network with some of the marketing people at the Dew Tour as well as get some tickets to the event then we are still accepting volunteers to help out. Thanks to everybody involved.
